The National Park of Tzoumerka, Peristeri and Arachthos Ravine is an open land area of approximately 820 sq. km. which geographically spreads in the mountainous areas of the prefectures of Ioannina, Arta and Trikala (Central part of the Pindos mountain range). Within its boundaries it contains two large mountain groups: Lakmo (Peristeri) and the Athamanika mountains (or Tzoumerka). It was established in 2009, by presidential decree (Government Gazette 49D/12.02.2009). The strong relief, the large altitude differences (144m.-2.429m.) and the strong presence of the water element, contribute to the creation of a diverse mosaic biotope. Many rare or even endemic plant species grow in the different habitats. 17 types of habitats have been recorded in the terrestrial ecosystems of the area, many rare and protected plant species are found, e.g. orchids, lilies. The protected area is particularly important for bird populations, while hundreds of species of invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals have been recorded. The National Park is a huge open-air museum of folklore and combines with unique harmony, features of both the natural and man-made environment. Stone bridges, cultural monuments, traditional settlements, works by the hands of people, which are harmoniously combined with the works of nature: beautiful landscapes, steep mountains, gorges, caves. This perfectly sculpted coexistence of the built and the natural environment gives the area its uniqueness.
